TABLE OF CONTENTS

We are pleased that you are interested in applying to the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Graduate Program at UCLA. All information necessary for applying via the World Wide Web is now available. The application deadline for Fall Quarter 2008 is January 15, 2008.

It is important that you read all requirements in this section before going on to Graduate Division's On-line Application Process.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

There are five elements that support your application:

·         STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

·         GRE GENERAL TEST

·         THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

·         TRANSCRIPTS

·         FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION

We look for evidence of strength in all of these. Other factors, such as research experience or publications, may be taken into consideration but they will not replace any of the above requirements.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE

Applicants should have a grade point average (GPA) in math, science and engineering courses of not less than 3.0/4.0 in the last two years of undergraduate study. Meeting the above minimum requirement does not guarantee admission; the actual standard for admission is set by the current pool of applicants, and is generally much higher.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The On-line Application allows you to include your statement of purpose. This statement should be precise and brief. Your statement is a means of helping us match your academic and research interests with those of our faculty (this is very important if you are applying for financial support) It should not be in a personal life history; it should contain only such personal details as will aid the Admissions Committee in evaluating your application. Describe exactly what you wish to study at UCLA. "Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering", for example is not specific enough. State what branch of Engineering interests you, e.g., biochemical engineering, processing environmental engineering, etc. For more information regarding specific fields of study in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, see Graduate Research Areas.

Please also refer to the instructions found on the Statement of Purpose form when completing the On-Line Application.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

At least three letters of recommendation should be submitted. Letters should be typed on the recommender's letterhead and attached to the recommendation form that you will be able to print from the On-line Application. The recommender can either forward the letter directly to our office themselves or return it to you so that you can forward it to our office. To ensure confidentiality please ask each recommender to seal the envelope and sign his or her name across the seal before returning it to you. The recommenders should state your full name, their full name and title, and their opinion of your ability to do graduate level research at UCLA.

You can now have your recommenders send their letters of recommendation to us instantly.  You will be required to list one e-mail address for each recommender when submitting your on-line application.  After you have submitted your application and after you have paid the application fee, each recommender will be contacted by UCLA and then they will forward their letters of recommendation on your behalf to our department via email.

We urge that all your letters be from academic references as recent as possible; If you have an M.S. degree, letters from professors who have served on your M.S. committee are particularly helpful. If you cannot obtain academic references, the letters should be from people who can comment on your recent professional attainments and your qualifications for graduate study in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UCLA.

Confidentiality. Applicants are not permitted to inspect letters of recommendation in their UCLA files. If you are admitted to UCLA and enroll, you will then have access to your letters of recommendation unless you have previously waived the right of access on the on-line application

GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION

GRE scores on the General (Aptitude) test are required for admission to both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. If necessary, GRE booklets can be obtained from any college or university bookstore. All students applying for Fall Quarter admission should take the test no later than November of the previous year GRE test date. The test must be taken within the last five (5) years before the desired date of admission. Arrange to have ETS forward the scores to our office. The GRE codes for UCLA's Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering are as follows: Institution Code is 4837; the Department Code is 1001. Check testing schedule and registration information on the GRE homepage.

TOEFL OR IELTS INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ONLY

The TOEFL codes for UCLA's Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department are as following: Institution Code is 4837; the Department Code is 64.

IMPORTANT: International students please refer to the English requirements on the Graduate Division Website.

International applicants who hold a bachelor’s or higher degree from a university located in the United States or in another country in which English is both the spoken language and the medium of instruction, or who have completed at least two years of full-time study at such an institution, are exempted from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.  Please be sure to include such information in your application.

TRANSCRIPTS

Please submit two official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. International students, please submit two official transcripts, degree certificates and/or diplomas. All documents must bear the actual seal and/or signature of the Registrar. Photocopies are not accepted. Do not send the original of an academic record which cannot be replaced; obtain a properly certified copy instead. All transcripts and credentials are evaluated by the UCLA Graduate Admissions Office in terms of UCLA equivalency.

FINANCIAL AID

Fellowships and teaching assistantships are awarded only once a year, usually in early March for studies beginning the following September.  Students who wish to maximize their chances of receiving aid should submit all of the required documentation before January 15.  Other forms of support, such as Research Assistantships, are provided directly by faculty members who have externally-funded contracts or grants.  While our school or grants support many students on such research funds, commitments are usually made after a student has demonstrated his or her ability in at least two quarters of study at UCLA.

Foreign students must have sufficient funds to support themselves for at least one year.  In the second year of study, foreign students are generally eligible to serve as teaching and research assistants.

CONFIDENTIAL FINANCIAL STATEMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The office of Graduate Admissions at UCLA requires that international admits prove that they have at least US $44,377.00 at their disposal for the first academic year. According to US Immigration and Naturalization regulations, the University may issue Certificates of Eligibility (I-20 forms) for visas only to applicants who have been offered admission and have submitted documented evidence (e.g. bank statements, letters of sponsorship, etc.) of sufficient funds for their study at UCLA. These documents must bear the appropriate seals and signatures as well as state the full name of the applicant and the application deadline. If Confidential Financial Statements are not received by the time of admission the I-20 form may be significantly delayed.

You will be able to print Confidential Financial Statement Forms during the On-line Application Process. For more information about international students at UCLA visit the Office of International Student Services.

WHEN TO APPLY
